Unit 6: Writing

UNIT 6: Writing

Writing is a process in which symbols (letters or punctuation marks, numbers, and spaces) are used to communicate. To write clearly it is necessary to understand the basic system of a language. In English includes knowledge of grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure.

The essential key to this skill is that it forms part of the productive skills of the English language as well as speaking. At the time of writing, we must coherently unite our ideas.

Below is a table that gathers the writing's subskills.

The writing subskills related to communicating our ideas include using appropriate style and register with cohesive texts.

Cohesive devices:

When talking about a correct way to join ideas we can find the cohesive devices that basically make sure that the texts make sense. An example of text is the essays that are made up of paragraphs. Paragraphs are the union of ideas that make sense and that are related to each other to give the meaning of a topic.

There are many examples of cohesive devices and according to the first module of TKT test we can find some of them with the following illustrative example of the module you can get a better idea of them:

Stages of Writing

There are a series of stages of writing that help the person to write in a better way and organize their ideas:

Developing ideas

Planning/organizing ideas

Drafting/writing the first draft (the first version (or form) of a piece of writing,

that may well be changed)

Editing (correcting and improving the general content of the text)

Proofreading (checking for mistakes and correcting)

Re-drafting (writing a second/final version of your piece of writing)

Activities that can be developed:

The activities are a creative way in which the teacher in charge can have a better management of the subject, that is, that the class environment is appropriate for the students and that they gain the motivation to be able to develop their writing skills in a better way.

Many activities help in accuracy and communication development.
